An Honest Look at Generational Trauma in Dan Pallotta’s ‘House on the Reservoir’

Artist: Dan Pallotta Single: House on the Reservoir Genre: Americana, Folk, Indie Folk Release Date: March 21st, 2024

“The core truth of lived experience in the song reveals Pallotta’s ability to “still […] have empathy for the people for whom you shouldered it out of a recognition that it’s something ancient, and probably didn’t belong to them either.” – House on the Reservoir EPK

An acoustic guitar, a harmonica, a piano and a soulful voice. It’s hard to conceptualize that that’s all that Pallotta used when painting this vivid picture. It feels much, much bigger than that – and the issues that he tackles are. ‘The ghost of my grandpa and my daddy, his son, and the war between the two of them that nobody won,” Pallotta sings, delving into the complexities of familial relationships with raw honesty.

It takes real strength to look at your family with a critical eye, to acknowledge the shaping influence they’ve had on our flaws and struggles. Pallotta confronts this head-on, crafting a poignant song that resonates deeply. Through his lyrics, we are transported into the heart of the story, feeling the disconnect and tension palpable in the air.

As we listen, we’re not just observers; we become part of the narrative, reminded of our shared humanity and the generational pain and trauma we all carry. Pallotta’s song serves as a mirror, reflecting our own experiences back to us and urging us to confront our inherited burdens with compassion and understanding.

It’s a beautiful yet sorrowful tableau he paints. I can almost see the dust hanging in the window, illuminated by the sun, in the “room that faced west.” It’s a beautiful, sorrowful picture. But beyond its beauty, the song serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of love and empathy in navigating life’s trials. For if we fail to confront our struggles and express our love, we risk passing on the ghosts of our unspoken emotions to future generations.

Pallotta’s song encourages us to reach out to our loved ones, to bridge the divides that separate us, and to cherish the connections that transcend time. It’s a powerful message that resonates long after the final notes fade. Perhaps it’s time to pick up the phone and call our own fathers.

“jerrord”- Wes Coeur Review
Jerrord_Album_Cover

Wes Coeur’s jerrord is a masterclass in duality. On the surface, it’s an effortlessly cool slice of electro-pop—driven by a thick, pulsating synth bass and topped with Wes’ Auto-Tuned melodies that glide somewhere between playful croon and knowing smirk. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll notice how chalant it really is. The production is polished to perfection, every layer meticulously placed, and the music video oozes style with a clarity that betrays how much thought went into it. This isn’t some slapdash bedroom pop experiment; this is calculated cool.
