‘Shadows’ by Blue Karma is a Dreamy Exploration of Everyday Life

Artist: Blue Karma Single: Shadows Genre: Dream Pop, Art Rock, Psychedelic Release Date: April 5th, 2024

Blue Karma, the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Jacob Adams, is a self-produced psych-pop project hailing from Wilmington, NC. Drawing inspiration from fellow self-produced artists like Tame Impala and Mac Demarco, Blue Karma weaves together a captivating tapestry of dreamy synthesizers, fuzzy guitars, and nostalgic acoustic elements.

Having recently assembled a five-piece band of talented studio musicians, Adams is now delving into the realm of live performances. Blue Karma has already made waves with the release of their EP, “Square One,” and their full-length album, “Electric Retrograde.” And the journey continues as they gear up to unveil a new album in 2024, kicking off with the release of a music video for the single “Shadows.”

“‘Shadows’ is one of my most vulnerable tracks, themed on depression,” Adams explains. “It’s one of those tracks that doesn’t necessarily sound sad, but harbors dark lyrics. It speaks to the confliction of feeling the need to suppress your feelings, hence the lyrics ‘drowning in the shadows’.” The accompanying music video intricately portrays the repetitive nature of everyday life, with symbolic imagery highlighting the struggle with depression. Adams is passionate about mental health awareness, aiming for the video to resonate with those facing similar battles and perhaps inspire them to channel their pain into creativity.

“Shadows” captivates with its beautiful flow, drawing listeners in with its smooth bassline and keeping them hooked with crunchy guitars, pure harmonies, and glistening energy. The lo-fi/dreamy sound is uniquely enriched by the electric guitar’s abrasive tone, which somehow maintains a softness that complements the atmospheric backdrop. Blue Karma delivers a compelling release that’s sure to leave a lasting impression.
