Detroit based blues band, Spyderhuff, combines a swampy jam band instrumental with a vocal sample of all-too-familiar sentiment. “If you wanna get there, just sit there,” a disembodied voice says to an imagined back seat driver. Twangy guitar licks and meandering drum fills pay homage to blues rock greats of the 70s. Each instrument takes a few moments to shine before returning back into the mosaic - this is real blues. It’s lighthearted and charming. It’s easy listening that could accompany the hottest of road trips.

Spyderhuff says,

“Whether you’re eating it or dishing it out, driver criticism will continue to be part of the human condition with no available exit ramp.”

Broad commentary on “the human condition” is big subject matter for an instrumental blues jam. Yet, given the track’s “who cares, anyway” attitude, it comes off as refreshing and carefree - the track could be about anything and everything, why not the human condition? It follows a well trodden trail paved by blues bands tackling broad subject matter with spoken word. Think "Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)” or Cake’s “Thrills.” They’re in good company.

Spyderhuff is steeped in Detroit blues-rock tradition. On the name, Spyderhuff says,

“Being raised in the Detroit area, one gets immersed in automotive history. Ed ‘Spider’ Huff worked with Henry Ford when they both were employed at the Detroit Edison powerplant in the 1890s. Ed was a self-taught genius concerning all things electrical, and Henry would later [develop] the early ignition systems on all Ford cars. So, the name is a tribute to all the unsung heroes in back rooms hidden from history who make and keep the wheels turning.”

If that’s not rock and roll then what is?

Spyderhuff’s members are Tom Kuhr (vocals, guitar, harmonica, sax, synth), Don Beyer (bass, synth), Jim Pauli (drums), Joey Gaydos (guitar), Tony Mitchell (congas, bongos, drums, backing vocals), and Julie Noe (backing vocals). Most of the members grew up together in the Detroit area as friends and musicians. In the late 60s and early 70s, they played genres ranging from jazz-fusion to hard rock.

Their experience shows. They sound like they’ve been listening to and playing the same tunes for a very long time. This kind of tightness doesn’t come from just a few rehearsals.

‘JUST SIT THERE’ is from an upcoming four-song EP entitled 'GONNA BUILD ME A HOT ROD.’ Keep an eye out for upcoming tracks from the EP, releasing throughout 2024.
