‘Natural Disaster’ by NORA: Unapologetic 90s Rebellion

Artist: NORA Single: Natural Disaster Genre: Grunge, Post-Punk, Skater Rock Release Date: March 22nd, 2024

It’s high energy, low effort rebellion. The song feels slapped together - in the best way. The guitar chords sound something like what comes out if you pick up a guitar, grab random frets, and strum. The melody is simple and repetitive. The drums carry an ethos of no-thoughts-just-bashing. It’s awesome. The track says ‘fuck you, I’ll do whatever I want.’ It lives in a world where too much effort is cringe, and the whole idea is to slap together the song, hit record, and say yeah that’s pretty good.  There's no pretense here, no attempt to impress with technical prowess or elaborate production, and its sloppiness gives it its charm.

24-year old Toronto native, Braeden is the brains behind NORA. When asked about the song, he explains: “When I’m on stage and feel the crowd’s energy building as they connect with a song [which was] inspired by a former coworker’s attempt to undermine me with the same words now fueling the audience’s excitement, it’s an incredibly empowering moment. It’s a visceral ‘fuck you’ to anyone who’s ever tried to put me down or make me feel less than my worth.” Consider blasting the song while flipping-off passersby in public: could be the move.

At its core, it’s a 90s skate compilation song, and it captures the raw essence of youthful rebellion. NORA's track, with its unpolished edges and unapologetic attitude, resonates with the spirit of defiance that defined the alternative music scene of the 1990s. It's as if Braeden has tapped into a time capsule of grunge and punk, channeling the DIY ethos that propelled bands like Nirvana and Green Day to stardom, and we wouldn’t be surprised if they followed suit.
