Artist: Mortal Prophets Album: Meine Liebe Genre: Electro, Avant-Garde, Leftfield Release Date: June 14th, 2024
In a Munich record store in 2018, John Beckmann, the enigmatic frontman for Mortal Prophets, stumbled upon a mysterious acetate record titled “Meine Liebe.” Bearing no artist’s name, the record’s haunting strains of German opera mingled with European electronica and new-wave echoes instantly captivated Beckmann. He surmised it hailed from 1977, but his extensive search for its creators yielded no results. The enigma of “Meine Liebe” ignited a creative fire in Beckmann, compelling him to resurrect and reimagine this lost musical artifact.
“What is real is what can be imagined, this collection of songs captures the glitter and doom of what was the Weimar Period in Germany,” Beckmann muses, encapsulating the essence of the project. He brought his discovery to David Sisko, a producer based in New York City. Sisko’s imagination was equally seized by the record’s wild and untamed beauty. Together, they embarked on a journey to breathe new life into “Meine Liebe,” crafting a bold new EP that intertwines the past and present.
The EP features six incarnations of the original track. From a meticulous recreation of the mono pressing to a contemporary stereo mix, and four spellbinding electronica and trip-hop renditions, each version offers a fresh perspective on the enigmatic song. Beckmann’s haunting vocals and evocative lyrics, combined with Sisko’s innovative production, delve into the depths of alternative music history, creating a sonic tapestry that transcends time.
“Meine Liebe” is not just a revival of a forgotten piece of music; it is a testament to the timeless nature of art. The EP is a portal into the underground dance clubs of 70s Germany, capturing the essence of an era that was both glittering and doomed. While the music may be an acquired taste, the story behind it is compelling enough to merit a listen. Beckmann and Sisko’s collaboration promises to enthrall listeners with its blend of historical mystery and innovative sound, proving that what is real is indeed what can be imagined.
For those willing to dive into this odd yet fascinating piece of art, “Meine Liebe” offers a unique auditory experience that transports listeners to a different time and place. It is a bold experiment that challenges conventional music boundaries, inviting us to explore the endless possibilities where past and present converge in a symphony of imagination.

There’s something about candid, straightforward honesty in lyrics that can cut deeper than overly abstract metaphors and symoblism and “what did they mean by that?” ‘Mr. Liar’ is a track that isn’t trying to dress anything up. The listener knows exactly what the singer is going through – it hits.
The most interesting part about this track, though, is the artist behind it. Check out Tende Kasha’s biography:
Through this project, there’s still a sense of the person behind the thing. It offers a unique perspective on both the genre and the medium, albeit with an unsettling edge. Luma Fade’s work demands attention, promising further evolution and innovation.

Childish Gambino surprises us with Atavista, a polished re-release of his 2020 album 3.15.20. Gambino originally released the unfinished record during the Covid-19 pandemic as a rushed love letter to his apocalypse anxiety and to his fans. Needing a master and a mix, Gambino resurfaced the entire album and dropped it alongside a list of tour dates. Atavista is an intimate album that somehow maintains oodles of mystique and disconnectivity. The words to the songs are new, but the album’s sound isn’t anything that we haven’t heard from Gambino before.
